Author Guidelines

We welcome proposals for research books, edited collections, textbooks, theses developed for publication and conference publications. Start with a proposal through our Submit a Proposal page or email info@maltonlondonpress.com. Please read the publication-specific assessment route and fees before submitting. Do not send confidential participant data in an initial enquiry.

Your proposal

Include a working title, the names and affiliations of authors or editors, a contact email, a concise description of the contribution, intended readership, an annotated contents list, estimated word count and completion date. Explain how the book relates to existing scholarship and comparable titles. Provide a short academic biography and a sample chapter where available. Disclose funding, prior publication, relevant conflicts and any simultaneous submission.

For edited volumes, identify the editors and proposed contributors, explain the organising theme and supply chapter summaries. For conferences, include the event details, responsible organiser, type and number of items, review arrangements and confirmation that contributors will grant the required rights.

Theses and dissertations

State the awarding institution, degree, year, examination outcome and repository link, if available. Supply evidence of any required corrections and check repository, sponsor and third-party permissions. Explain the revisions needed for a book readership. Doctoral projects use the examined thesis route described in our Peer Review Policy. Masters dissertations require the scholarly book review route.

Manuscript preparation

Submit an editable Word file with a matching PDF. Use heading styles consistently, numbered pages and clearly labelled chapters. Supply a title page, contents, abstract or synopsis, author information, acknowledgements, funding and conflicts statements, references and any required ethics statements. For chapters and papers, provide an abstract of approximately 150–250 words and 4–6 keywords.

Use a consistent recognised reference style appropriate to the discipline. Check names, dates, page references and DOI links against the cited sources. Provide editable tables and separate high-quality figure files with captions and source information. Photographic images should normally be at least 300 dpi at their intended print size. Provide alt text for meaningful images and explain complex figures in the surrounding text.

Permissions and responsibility

Identify all third-party material and obtain permission covering the proposed formats and licence where needed. A thesis permission or an online image credit may not cover commercial publication or open licensing. Mark any excluded material clearly. Authors are responsible for factual accuracy, quotations, references and the rights information they supply.

From submission to publication

Editorial assessment and revision

We assess the proposal and explain the appropriate route. If invited, submit the complete manuscript and requested supporting information. Respond to review and editorial comments in a separate document, explaining the changes made or the reasons for a different approach. Acceptance depends on resolving the issues identified; it is not guaranteed by an invitation or a provisional schedule.

Agreement and production

After editorial acceptance, the agreement records the accepted manuscript, publication formats, licence, Book Processing Charge, print copies, delivery arrangements and expected schedule. Copyediting and production begin after the agreed payment arrangements are complete. We send proofs for checking. Authors should correct errors and answer queries within the agreed timeframe; extensive rewriting at proof stage requires a revised production plan.

Before release, authors approve the final text and check their names, affiliations, title, acknowledgements, references, rights statements and metadata. The Press prepares the publication page and agreed identifiers. Publication dates depend on manuscript readiness, revisions and production checks. An accelerated thesis route does not bypass integrity or permissions checks.

Funding and licence requirements

Speak to your library, research office or funder about support before committing to a charge. Explain any required licence, repository deposit, acknowledgement or publication deadline at proposal stage. We can provide a written quotation and publication details for a funding request, but an institution or funder decides eligibility and reimbursement. We do not make a blanket promise that every publication meets every funding policy.

After publication

Share the publisher’s permanent publication page or DOI and use the correct citation. Authors may deposit the published open access edition under its stated licence. Report substantive errors promptly. A revised edition is a separate editorial project and must be distinguished from a correction to an existing edition.
