Book Processing Charges
Malton London Press publishes open access books and conference publications. Readers can access the available open access editions without paying a subscription or download fee. Publication is supported by a single Book Processing Charge (BPC) for the complete volume, paid by the author, institution, funder or conference organiser. A Chapter Processing Charge (CPC) applies only under the chapter-funded arrangement described below. We do not charge a separate open access fee: the BPC is the only charge for the agreed package.
The following standard BPCs are in pounds sterling and apply to the stated scope. A BPC is for the complete publication unless a row specifically describes a Chapter Processing Charge. Word counts include notes and references. The final scope and total are recorded in the publishing agreement before payment.

One BPC for each publication
An edited volume is normally funded through the £3,000 BPC. Where a 12-chapter project uses chapter funding, the £250 CPC per chapter forms part of that same £3,000 total. It is not added to a fully paid BPC. A sponsor or the editors must cover any funding shortfall agreed before contracting. Chapter acceptance always depends on editorial assessment and the applicable review process.
For conference publications, the contracting organiser pays the BPC for the volume. Malton London Press does not also charge the individual contributors for the same package. Conference attendance and registration fees are separate arrangements made by the organiser.
What the BPC includes
The standard BPC covers editorial administration, coordination of the applicable assessment route, copyediting and proofreading, typesetting, cover design, ISBN assignment for the agreed editions, DOI registration and metadata preparation, online open access publication, and three printed copies sent together to one agreed address with standard postage included. Our editorial and production team manages the process and provides a named project contact.
For edited books and full paper proceedings, the package includes a DOI for each substantive chapter or paper as well as the volume record. For abstract books, individual abstract DOIs are included within the stated limit. Metadata must identify an abstract as an abstract. The agreed digital package includes a searchable PDF; any EPUB or other format will be specified in the agreement.
There are no separate mandatory proofreading, editing, cover design, DOI, proof approval or standard postage charges for the agreed package. Authors remain responsible for substantive rewriting and for supplying a complete, accurate manuscript. We do not write research findings or substantive scholarly arguments on an author’s behalf.
Projects outside the standard scope
A longer manuscript, specialist typesetting, extensive colour printing, translation, third-party permissions, additional print copies or an additional delivery address may require a separate written quotation. Optional services are agreed before work starts. We will not introduce a compulsory extra charge after acceptance for work already included in the agreed package. If an author requests a material change, we explain its cost and obtain written agreement first.
Discounts and financial support
An author who receives a written 50% Doctoral Thesis to Book offer pays £1,000 instead of the standard £2,000. The offer letter states eligibility and any expiry date. Discounts do not change assessment standards, author rights or the services included in the agreed package. They cannot be combined unless expressly agreed in writing.
Authors may request a reduction or waiver where funding is unavailable. Requests are assessed separately from the scholarly decision and depend on available support. A request does not guarantee an award. Authors seeking institutional or grant support should obtain approval from their funder before accepting financial commitments.
Invoices and payment
There is no proposal submission fee. A BPC invoice is issued only after editorial acceptance and agreement of the publishing terms. The BPC is paid once, before production begins. The published standard price is the total payable for the stated package, including any applicable VAT and standard postage. The invoice identifies the contracting entity, payer, project and any tax component within that total. Optional additions require a separate written agreement before ordering. No additional mandatory payment will be requested later for the agreed services.
Cancellation and refunds
If a project is rejected before invoicing, no BPC is due. If the author cancels after payment but before production work begins, the payment is refunded less the cost of editorial assessment and administration already undertaken, as set out in the agreement. Once production starts, a cancellation refund reflects work completed and costs committed up to the date the Press receives written notice of cancellation, as set out in the agreement. If the Press cannot deliver the agreed publication for reasons within its control, it refunds the BPC paid, which is the extent of the Press's liability in respect of the project. Refunds are issued to the original payer within 30 days of the Press confirming the cancellation and are calculated on the amount actually paid after any discount or waiver. These terms do not restrict applicable statutory rights. Post-publication research-integrity decisions are independent of payments.
