Abstract

The Ziaur Rahman Era: Reconsidering Bangladesh in Politics, Governance, and Change offers a comprehensive re-evaluation of President Ziaur Rahman’s role in shaping modern Bangladesh. Drawing on historical analysis and political interpretation, the book traces Zia’s transition from a decorated military officer during the 1971 Liberation War to a central architect of post-independence state-building.

The book examines his leadership across multiple dimensions: the consolidation of national identity through the concept of “Bangladeshi nationalism,” the restoration of multi-party democracy, constitutional reforms, decentralisation of governance, rural development initiatives, and economic liberalisation policies. It also explores his foreign policy strategy, which sought to diversify international alliances and strengthen Bangladesh’s sovereignty in a complex regional environment.

Rather than presenting a purely biographical account, the book adopts a thematic structure to analyse how Zia’s policies addressed instability, economic crisis, and institutional fragility in the years following independence. It argues that his reform agenda significantly influenced Bangladesh’s political trajectory, development model, and democratic framework.

Overall, the book invites international readers to reconsider Ziaur Rahman’s legacy within the broader context of nation-building, governance reform, and post-conflict state consolidation in South Asia.
